A day at historic Eastern Market is a feast for the eyes--and the soul. Situated in the gritty urban landscape of Detroit, Michigan, one can find the most amazing fruits, vegetables, and flowers in one of the many covered "sheds" in the area--and then walk outside to listen to the street musicians or follow the delectable aroma of an outdoor barbecue to discover mouth-watering chicken and ribs sizzling on the grill. Today, for approximately $25, I purchased sweet peas, asparagus (two big, beautiful bunches for $3), a honeycomb and honey "straws", homemade tart cherry jam, a loaf of fresh farm bread, a small bag of Michigan maple candy, and sharp white cheddar cheese (my favorite).
If you are ever in the Detroit area, I highly recommend a visit to Eastern Market. One word of warning, though--get there EARLY, as it is a teeming mass of humanity by 10 a.m.! It is well worth the trip, however, especially for all of you artistic types who are inspired by the luscious sight of a perfectly ripe vegetable, a flat of flowers still glistening with dew--or people in all of their wonderfully colorful diversity.
